Dynamax - Dynamic speeds
The Dynamax project uses dynamic maximum speeds to improve traffic flow. The speed limit is matched to current traffic, road and local conditions: drive faster when you can, slower when you have to.

Technolution is contributing to the specification, building and roll-out of the central Dynamax servers. Based on the measurement results from the current situation and management scenarios, the central Dynamax system determines the appropriate speed. This speed is then shown on the dynamic panels to inform road users.

Speeding up and slowing down

Dynamax uses speed reductions to - for example - improve traffic flow in certain traffic conditions or to keep air quality within the set limits. Maximum speeds may be increased during quiet periods to reduce journey times. As soon as a speed limit needs to be modified, the new maximum speed appears on the panels above and/or beside the road.

Testing

The Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat) is testing Dynamax on trial sections of four motorways; the A1, the A58, the A12 and the A20. In evaluating the test results, Rijkswaterstaat is looking for any reduction in the numbers of queues and accidents. Naturally, it will also be looking at the safety and environmental impact, as well as at the acceptance of the traffic measures by road users and the implications for road managers.
